Some of the Pacific Northwest’s top high
school teams will square off at Les Schwab Hoop Challenge December 10
A collection of the
top high school boys and girls basketball teams in the Pacific Northwest
will take part in the 2005 Les Schwab Hoop Challenge. The event will take
place Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Bellevue Community College. A total of
eight games (six boys and two girls games).
One of the country’s
most highly recruited players will be part of this year’s event. Kevin Love,
a 6-foot-10 junior at Lake Oswego High School near Portland, will lead the
Lakers against two-time defending state champion O’Dea. Love averaged 25.9
points, 15.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game last season as the Lakers
finished second in the Class 4A state tournament. O’Dea, led by junior
Jamelle McMillian (Son of Portland Trail Blazer coach Nate McMillan) and
senior Michael Duty, is looking for its third straight state championship.
But there are plenty
of other big games on the schedule for the Les Schwab Hoop Challenge,
including a girls interstate game between Redmond and Lake Oswego – two
teams which are always among the best in their states. There is also a boys
interstate matchup between Franklin of Seattle and Jefferson from Portland –
two of the top teams in the Northwest.
Some of the top
players in the Pacific Northwest will be on display, including DeAngelo
Jones of Kennedy, Jeffrey Downs of Bellevue Christian and Michael Taylor of
Brewster. There are plenty of high-powered players and high-powered teams
involved in this year’s event.
A total of 13 of the
16 teams involved in the event played in a state tournament last year in
either Washington or Oregon. State champions include Bellevue Christian
(Washington Boys Class 1A) and King’s (Washington Girls Class 2A).
Second-place state finishers include Lake Oswego (Oregon Boys Class 4A),
Brewster (Washington Boys Class 1A) and Snohomish (Washington Girls Class
4A).
Tickets are $10 and
are good for all day and will be available at the door.

2004 Game Recaps and Scores
The West's Best Clash at the
Les Schwab Hoop Challenge
Final Game
The Team from the OC holds off the Beach
The nation's 14th ranked team from Santa Ana, California came into SPU's Royal Brougham
Pavillion and showed why they are considered Prep Ball Royalty. The Monarchs of Mater Dei
defeated Rainier Beach 75-72 in an amazing display of basketball in front of a large crowd.
Mater Dei's Taylor King - a 6-7 sophomore who already has verbally committed to UCLA showed
what is "bruin" in his talents... an amazing range. He made 8 three pointers on twelve attempts
and made a few from the foul like too as part of his game high 35 points. For the Monarchs, it
was their sixth straight win to start the 2004-05 season.
Rainier Beach fell for the second time in five games desipte a courageous performance by
their Louisville-bound star Terrence Williams. Working against massive cramps and a torn tendon,
the man known as Thunder cranked up his game for 29 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Visitors from South of the Border show power against Defending Washington State
Champions
They looked like a college team, with a front line average height of 6-7 - decked out in
custom made Nike from head to toe. Their opponent was not intimidated.
The O'Dea Fighting Irish used a disiplined game to contain the Democrats of Jefferson
(Portland) for most of the game, before the Demos took charge with a 19-11 run in the final
period to take the border battle 69-56.
Conor Mullen led the way for the Irish with 17 points while the Demos were led by Mac Hopson
also with 17.
