Thomas, McMillan and Gray in top 100

The state might lack a big-name recruit on the level of Seattle Prep's Spencer Hawes in this year's senior class, but several high-school basketball players from Washington are drawing attention nationally.

Three players from the Puget Sound area were listed in Sports Illustrated's Hot 100 Seniors list released this week, led by 47th-ranked Isaiah Thomas of Curtis (University Place). Thomas, a 5-foot-9 point guard, is verbally committed to Washington. Thomas and his Curtis teammates will play Franklin in the annual King Holiday Hoopfest Presented by The Seattle Times at the University of Washington, Monday, Jan. 15.

Also on the list are O'Dea guard Jamelle McMillan at 94, and Bainbridge guard Steven Gray at 99. McMillan, the son of Nate McMillan, former Sonics player and coach and current Trail Blazers coach, has verbally committed to Arizona State. Gray has verbally committed to Gonzaga.

McMillan and O'Dea will face Kentwood in the Les Schwab Hoop Challenge Dec. 9 at Bellevue Community College and then the Irish will take on Lynden in the King Holiday Hoopfest Presented by The Seattle Times at UW on Jan. 15. Gray and his Bainbridge teammates will take on Bothell on Jan. 15 in the King Holiday Hoopfest at UW.

O.J. Mayo of Huntington, W. Va., tops the list, followed by Lake Oswego's Love.

Final Game

The Team from the OC holds off the Beach

The nation's 14th ranked team from Santa Ana, California came into SPU's  Royal Brougham Pavillion and showed why they are considered Prep Ball Royalty. The Monarchs of Mater Dei defeated Rainier Beach 75-72 in an amazing display of basketball in front of a large crowd.

Mater Dei's Taylor King - a 6-7 sophomore who already has verbally committed to UCLA showed what is "bruin" in his talents... an amazing range. He made 8 three pointers on twelve attempts and made a few from the foul like too as part of his game high 35 points. For the Monarchs, it was their sixth straight win to start the 2004-05 season.

Rainier Beach fell for the second time in five games desipte a courageous performance by their Louisville-bound star Terrence Williams. Working against massive cramps and a torn tendon, the man known as Thunder cranked up his game for 29 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Visitors from South of the Border show power against Defending Washington State Champions

They looked like a college team, with a front line average height of 6-7 - decked out in custom made Nike from head to toe. Their opponent was not intimidated.

The O'Dea Fighting Irish used a disiplined game to contain the Democrats of Jefferson (Portland) for most of the game, before the Demos took charge with a 19-11 run in the final period to take the border battle 69-56.

Conor Mullen led the way for the Irish with 17 points while the Demos were led by Mac Hopson also with 17.
